Healthy Soul Food Weekly devotional by Barbara Sanders
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Proverbs 13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

| Barbecue, fireworks, picnics - all of this suggests a great fourth of July! Meat on the grill, barbecued to perfection, fills the stomachs of all those that want to celebrate the fourth. At night, everyone wants to celebrate by having fireworks in the backyard. Many cities will have fireworks put on that can be seen for miles around! The fireworks are a beautiful display of what man can do with lights.
All colors light up the skies at one time, making a gorgeous show in the sky.
Barbecue is good to fill the stomach, either at the backyard barbecue, or at a picnic. But, barbecue won't satisfy the soul. As the stomach yearns for food, so does the soul. When God created man, he breathed into his nostrils and he became a living soul. [ Genesis 2:7 ] To feed the soul, we need to feed it with the Word of God. But, an unwise man will feed his body before feeding the soul. Our soul
can 'starve' without the right food.
We are humans, and humans like fun. Sometimes we overlook what is good for us (spiritually) to get or do what we think is good for us (bodily). This makes us susceptible to sicknesses, diseases, depression, among other things. To guard against all this, we need to heed the Word: 'Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of God.' [ II Timothy 2:15 ]

| Heavenly Father, the fourth of July is a holiday that holds lots of fun. But, fun will not get us what our soul needs. Help us to read the Word and apply it daily to our lives. Help us enrich our minds by studying and obeying your Word. We give you praise! Jesus name we pray. Amen. |
