Watching football games was never a priority for my husband. My children and I used to frequent the ball games during their years in school. But, we lost contact with all football activity afterwards, with the exception of the Alabama/Auburn football game played yearly.
Our grandson, who is a ninth grade quarterback this year, began his school football activity in the eighth grade. That got the attention of grandpa! It's as though the next game can't come quickly enough, and the season ends too soon. We sit there in amazement as the talent showed on the field with those young people, from both teams playing. There is nothing going to stop them trying to get that touchdown or that next point. They put themselves in danger every time they try to stop the opponent's move toward the finish line.
UPDATE: Our grandson is now a Junior and has been the kicker for his football team for the past two years. He continues to improve in his ability to kick harder and longer kicks. And, he has grown in character and spirit.
We should be just as attentive to our move toward the finish line in our spiritual lives. We should keep our eyes fashioned on God, ready to do whatever He commands us to do, in order to win the last 'goal'. If the football players linger around on the twenty yard line while their opponents are pressing toward the end zone, then, they'll be the losers. Equally, if we sit back and our complacent in our living for God, then perhaps we won't win the final prize of eternity with Him. Let's be careful to watch for His return, stay steadfast in our approach to salvation, and keep our hearts and minds stayed on Him alone.
Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
