A MIGHTY AND TERRIBLE GOD October 19,
2000 Our Thoughts:
Today, I went to my Mother's home. Her sister and husband were here from Georgia, and wanted to go
up to the country to get home-grown meal and sorghum syrup. So, we went out on a scouting trip. Got there, and the doors were locked tight. Couldn't find a soul who knew
if they were actually closed for lunch only, or closed forever. So, needless to say, we left without the goods.
On the way back to where we were going to eat lunch, I told her that it's not often you get to go on a wild goose chase, and end up on a 'burnt run'.
And, that brought up the subject of how powerful God really is.
We have suffered droughts this year, mightily! The crops have been devastated, and costs have risen all over the land. The shrubbery and grass and flowers of our
yards have dried or died. The trees, which turn beautiful colors in the fall, have all about lost their leaves, leaving hardly any for the fall drives that everyone loves. Along the way,
I thought, 'how terrible it is for the person who doesn't know God, and looks upon the things of the earth for their HOPE. The land can't produce without water. The trees, which gives us many
products, can't grow without water, and will die. Without water, even man would eventually die. But, to place our hope solely in this earth would be disastrous!
God alone should be the source of our supply. That doesn't mean we don't work, for we need to be productive. But, it means that, in times of troubles, we call upon Him, and he
will deliver us. In time of need, he will supply - He feeds the ravens of the field, without them doing anything - how much more does He love us?
But, God is a righteous God. We must follow after Him in righteousness, not what we think is right, trying to satisfy the people of the Word. God wants a people 'after God's own heart',
just like David. David wasn't perfect man, but he was forgiven, and out to please God. That should be our only goal, to completely satisfy God, whatever the cost.
God's Thoughts:
Psalms 104:14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
Nehemiah 1:5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
Our Cup:
Heavenly Father, we want to please you in all our ways. Help us turn loose of our thoughts and ways, and take on the ways of the righteous. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
