Bread (The Basics) and Butter (Extras)

Our Thoughts:

Bread and butter is one of my downfalls! Just give me some fresh-baked yeast bread and butter, and diets can go right out the window! I'm the granddaughter of a wonderful English grandmother who knew how to bake bread! You could smell it the moment you opened her door. And, I loved to eat it, and also learned to bake it. Take anything else away, but, please don't take my bread!

Butter is another thing: I love it on the hot bread, but, I don't always require it. Although it does lend a certain taste to the taste buds, when it is on the hot bread, it's not necessary to have in order to eat the bread and enjoy it.

In our daily lives there are lots of 'bread and butter'. The bread is the basics we need. The butter is the 'condiments'(extras) or distractions of life. We think that it's mandatory to have the 'condiments' with our bread - butter, jelly, or applesauce. We have yet to learn that the condiments are just extras that make the 'Bread' taste good, but they aren't always needed.

In our spiritual lives, the 'bread' (WORD) is what is needed. The 'condiments' or 'extras' are not needed in our walk with the Lord. We get hung up on 'programs', the music, or other distractions in our church, and forget the importance of the 'bread' (Word). When we do this, the enemy can easily slip in, because we are not wearing the 'full armor' of God. We aren't prepared to ward off the enemy, when he strikes, because we aren't grounded in the Word. The Word works only when we have it down in our hearts, and apply it to life. The more we read and study the Word, the more we are equipped to come against the attacks of the enemy at any given time. The 'condiments' easily slip away or pass away, but the Bread (Word) is always there, never changes, and will always work!

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Our Cup:

Heavenly Father, bread and butter, in the nature, is scrumptious! But, we realize we need the Bread of Life in order to gain access to eternity with you. Teach us to meditate in your Word day in night, to get it deep with our spirit, and not get caught up in the 'extras'. We give you praise! In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
