Hello from Barbara's Entourage
Easter - Just Another Day?
When you think of Easter, what do you think of? Does your mind first wander to Easter baskets, filled with all kinds of goodies, and beautiful decorated eggs? Do you think of hiding those eggs for the children to have an Easter egg hunt? And I am sure you can't wait to get to that table where all the delicious food is just waiting for you to sink your teeth into it.
Yes, that is what Easter seems to be about to most people. I have to admit I was caught in the trap as well. Every Easter, we would spend Saturday night dying those eggs, making some gorgeous ones to go in the baskets. And in would go candy, color books, crayons, and more candy! Sometimes there would be an Easter bunny tucked in there as well.
But, is that what Easter is all about? Actually, as I've grown older, I realize that Easter should be the day celebrated as Jesus' resurrection. After all, He hung on the cross and then spent those three days in the tomb just for us. On that third day, Mary Magdalene and other women went to the tomb to visit and found the rock rolled away. And Jesus was gone! That told the apostles, but they didn't believe the women. It was just idle words to them. Isn't that how it still goes in the world today? But Peter went to the grave site and found the linen clothes and wondered what had happened. During that day, two of them went into Emmaus and were discussing what might have happened to Jesus. And as they were talking, Jesus appeared, but they didn't know him. They thought He was a stranger in the town and didn't know about the crucifixion. In some circles today, He is still unknown, not recognized for Who He is or what He has done for all of us.
Easter Sunday is what we make it - either a secular holiday, made only for decorating Easter eggs, spending time with your family hiding them, and eating and fellowship. Or, it can be a significant time in your Christian life - the time when you realize just what Christ did for you. By His death and resurrection, we can gain eternal life through His mercy and grace. If you are saved, then Jesus is alive in you!
