Hello from Barbara's Entourage

Hot or Cold?

The weather has changed so drastically just in the past few weeks. It seems as though we were experiencing summer temperatures right up to this week! And we've had enough rain that it has soaked the ground. Everything outside seems to be mildewing! Everyone we talk with is having the same problems.

This morning, we knew it would be cool, but COLD? Soccer games were on our 'menu' for the day. We expected it to be cold at the one by the lake. But, the sun was shining and it was comfortable with a light coat. That was at ten in the morning. That wasn't to last until the game at two in the afternoon. The sun went behind the clouds, the wind was blowing, and you would have thought old man frost was on the way!! It took more than a light coat to get me through the game. In fact, I had on a sweatshirt, and two coats and still shaking almost uncontrollably. I can almost assure you those girls in shorts wished they had on sweats! But, then, they were working themselves into a sweat, running after the ball. So, perhaps they didn't notice?

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

The Bible says it will rain on the just and the unjust. So, that means we all have to put up with the temperatures, whether it be hot beyond the norm, or cold enough for our teeth to chatter in the early part of November here in the South. As long as the He leaves us here on this earth, and the earth remains, then we will have all the seasons, the hot and freezing temperatures - a time to plant, and a time to harvest.

We should take heed in our spiritual lives to be ON FIRE for God. Make sure we are tending to the needful things of our spiritual lives, and paying less attention to the things of the world that will not help us in our walk with God. Too many times, we grow slack in serving God, while seeking the pleasures of life. Our lives shouldn't match the seasons: inconsistency should not be the happening. Reaching heaven will only happen when we've been true to God. We cannot serve both God and mammon.

Revelation 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
Revelation 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Heavenly Father, I know it's cold outside, but help us to have a warm heart towards you. Teach us to keep our minds stayed on you and your promises, that we will never slack off and become cold. We want to be able to hear, 'well done, thy good and faithful servant'. We give you praise. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

The Weight of Prayer (Author Unknown)

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.

John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store. Visualizing the family needs, she said: "Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can." John told her he could not give her credit, as she did not have a charge account at his store.

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, "Do you have a grocery list?" Louise replied "Yes sir!"

"O.K." he said: "Put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries." Louise, hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down. The grocer staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, "I can't believe it."

The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more. The grocer stood there in utter disgust.

Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement. It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said: "Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands." The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and placed on the scales and stood in stunned silence. Louise thanked him and left the store. The customer handed a fifty dollar bill to John as he said, "It was worth every penny of it."

It was sometime later that John Longhouse discovered the scales were broken; therefore only God knows how much a prayer weighs.

A word or two from ......

Christianity Today
By Steve Gertz

With an attack on Iraq seeming imminent, Christian leaders are asking the obvious question: "Is such a war morally justified?" In a recent letter to George W. Bush, five prominent evangelicals, including Charles Colson and Bill Bright, gave their full approval to a war effort.

How to Bear Little Worries

Accustom yourself, wrote a pious author, to stoop with sweet condescension, not only to exigencies (that is your duty), but to the simple wishes of those who surround you - - - the accidents which may intervene; you will find yourself seldom, if ever, crushed.

To bend is better than to bear; to bear is often a little hard; to bend implies a certain external sweetness that yields all constraint, sacrificing the wishes, even in holy things, when they tend to cause disagreements in the family circle.

Submission often implies an entire resignation to all that God permits. The soul that endures feels the weight of it's trouble. The soul that yields scarcely perceives it.

Blessed are those docile ones; they are those whom God selects to work for Him.

By Charlotte M. Yonge - 1880
