Hello from Barbara's Entourage

Give Thanks

The week coming up is Thanksgiving week. We all think about getting together with family or friends for a great lunch and fellowship. We can just imagine the wonderful taste of that turkey and dressing and the scrumptious pumpkin and sweet potato pies! I always enjoyed getting together at my Mother's with our family, knowing that the table and the cabinets were going to be filled with more food than an army could eat, and all of it would be good!! Sure, we had to taste everything!!

But, Thanksgiving shouldn't be the only day we 'give thanks'. In fact, we need to give thanks every day in every thing. Our human mind says, "Everything?" Well, the thought is, we can either give thanks, or we can grunt and grumble about what has happened to us, how bad we feel, or how terrible our finances are. OR, we can give thanks to God, that we are alive, it is a new day - the sky is blue, the flowers are blooming, life is worth living! Too often, we get off on the cares of this life, and forget the things for which we should be thankful!!

My God is an awesome God. His plan was to give His best to His children. But, the enemy got in the plan and caused Eve and Adam to stray in the garden of Eden. Therefore, we have had to endure what they set in motion. But, we can overcome all those things. We don't have to 'endure' the heartaches, trials, and tribulations that the enemy wants to set on us - or does! We can call upon the one above who wants us to prosper spiritually, physically, and materially. Life doesn't have to be the 'downs', but it can be the 'ups', if we turn to God. When we become His Child, and He is truly our FATHER, He wants us to have the good in life - not the bad. But, while He wants this for His children, He expects us to adhere to His commandments, to cast our cares upon Him, and to give thanks and praise to His name.

So, while you are enjoying those wonderful dishes this Thanksgiving, remember it is God that has made it possible for us to celebrate. So give thanks this day, and every day.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.

The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about Grandfather," said the son. I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometime he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

To Obtain Peace

That others may be loved more than myself. JESUS grant this desire.

That others may be more highly esteemed.

That others may grow and increase in honor, and I decrease. JESUS, grant me to desire it.

That others may attract the praise, and myself be forgotten.

That others may be preferred in all.
