TOP OF THE MANTLE

Hello from Barbara's Entourage

Only God Knows

We had a cold weather warning for our area last night. The temperature was to get down into the single digits, which is very cold for us. I don't know how cold it really was during the night, but surely not into the single digits. It was in the low 20's very early in the morning, when my husband got up.

Often, the weatherman gives us storm warnings, tornado warnings, or just the mention of rain or snow. Sometimes it comes, and sometimes it doesn't. We never know, for sure, what the weather will hold for us from day to day. There have been times when the weatherman has completely missed the weather altogether! So who do you rely on?

God knows all things. From the beginning of time, God was! He sent his own Son as the living Word. Scripture says 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ' [John 1:1] He had a plan from the beginning of time. I am sure the weather was included!

Ecclesiastes 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Heavenly Father, time is in your hands. You hold our destiny. Help us to keep your commandments, keep our eyes stayed upon you, knowing that you will soon return. We give you thanks for all things. In Jesus name, we pray.

All Scriptures are taken from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.

SPECIAL FEATURE DEVOTIONAL

When God Shows Up

<((< -- <((< -- <(< -- <((< -- <((< -- <((<

"Defeat may serve as well as victory
To shake the soul and let the glory out.
When the great oak is straining in the wind,
The boughs drink in new beauty, and the trunk
Sends down a deeper root on the windward side.
Only the soul that knows the mighty grief
Can know the mighty rapture. Sorrows come
To stretch out spaces in the heart for joy."

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.

'THIS AND THAT' ...
Joy, Humor, and Faith on the net!

I've learned to seek a message in some simple, homey ways,
And I've found many lessons in the dreariest of days.
So one day in my kitchen, I began to sing a song
About the iron skillet that I've cooked with for so long.

Oh, I've had other vessels of different shapes and brands...
Bowls with copper bottoms, and shiny pots and pans,
But when I need a frying pan, each time I seem to choose
The black cast iron skillet...the one I always use.

<>No, its not much to look at; its been around awhile,
And in a modern kitchen, I suppose it's out of style.
But it's just the thing for corn bread, or frying up some taters,
So I'll save my stainless steel pans. Could be I'll use them later.

The world is like a kitchen; its people, pots and pans.
Each vessel made for a special use, and not by human hands.
Precious golden chalices and fancy silver cups,
And crystal glasses, waiting for the Lord to fill them up.

Now I'm not much to look at, but the Lord must have a need
For a common country person who moves at her own speed...
Whose clothing isn't fancy and whose manners are quite plain:
If I feel He can use me, then my life is not in vain.

Each person has a purpose...and if only we will see,
God has a plan for everyone, and there's a plan for me.
So maybe now you understand why I can shout and sing:
I'm a cast iron skillet in the kitchen of a King!

SNIPPET FROM THE MANTLE
A word or two from ......

"GOLD DUST" ON THE MANTLE

Love is given us to help us onwards, nearer to God. The most blessed is that which draws us nearest to Him; and in proportion as it leads to God we realize its blessedness.

The essence of true love is not its tenderness, but its strength, power of endurance, its purity, its self-renunciation.

The mistake we make is when we seek to be loved, instead of loving. What makes us cowardly is the fear of losing that love.

Never forget this: A selfish heart desires love for itself; a Christian heart delights to love - - without return.

By Charlotte M. Yonge - 1880
