TOP OF THE MANTLE

Another week has gone, and so much has happened in America. The tragedy in NY and Washington DC will forever be written in our minds. Tributes have been made, memorials have been held, and they have yet to find the vast portion of the 6,000 plus people whose lives were lost. It has been such a sad time for all the workers, hunting their fellow firefighters and policeman, and the remainder of the workers lost that morning. Nothing will ever remove that from their memory - it's like it's put there with indelible ink, for a constant reminder. They keep at the task at hand, wanting to find one more body.
Life will never be the same in America, but God can bring peace to our hearts. The lives of the families touched by these deaths have been changed, rearranged, not by them, but by a senseless act of terrorism. We continue to pray for those families, that God can help them through the rough times ahead. May God gather them under his wings, to give them comfort that only He can give.

'THIS AND THAT' ...
Joy, Humor, Faith on the Net
THE FAITHFUL PREACHER
Several years ago a preacher moved to Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, 'you better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it'. Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Besides, the bus company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet.' When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change." The driver with a smile, replied, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change." When the man stepped off the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, and held on, and said, "O God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."

SNIPPET FROM THE MANTLE
A word or two from ......
Brad Buchholz
American-Statesman Staff
Wednesday, September 19, 2001
WACO -- The friends of Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry concede that they've explored all other options. For six weeks now, they've placed their faith in diplomacy, the law, the power of personal appeal -- so far without remedy. As the nation sits on the brink of war, they concede that there's nothing left for them to hold on to now. Nothing, except prayer.

"GOLD DUST" ON THE MANTLE
|
CHARITY
Be good-natured, benevolent, keep up a cheerful expression of countenance even when alone.
That clumsiness, those brusque, rude manners, let them pass without notice.
When wishes contrary to your own prevail, yield without ill-humor, or even showing your effort; you will give pleasure, and thus be pleased yourself.
Try to please, to console, to amuse, to bestow, to thank, to help. That is all in itself so good!
Try to do some good to the souls of others! An earnest word, some encouragement, a prayer softly breathed.
By Charlotte M. Yonge - 1880 |
