Hello from Barbara's Entourage

Only a few days to Christmas, and it's raining here in Alabama. But rain doesn't put a damper on the Spirit of Christmas! Every child is in a state of expectation - hoping they will get that one gift under the tree that they wanted the most. Some will be surprised, and others disappointed.

But, there is one thing that won't change this Christmas season. We still celebrate the reason for the season - the birth of our Savior, Jesus. Some may get caught up in the holiday spirit, and forget that the real reason for Christmas is the birth of Jesus - not in buying Christmas presents, and decorating trees and homes, or in cooking the biggest meal of the year. All of that will pass, but Jesus wil be with us until the end of time!

Merry Christmas to each of you this year!

Matthew 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

"There's a song in the air!
There's a star in the sky!
There's a mother's deep prayer,
And a baby's low cry!
And the star rains its fire
While the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King."

Alabama was the first state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday. This tradition began in 1836.

In 1907, Oklahoma became the last USA state to declare Christmas a legal holiday.

The abbreviation of Xmas for Christmas is not irreligious. The first letter of the word Christ in Greek is chi, which is identical to our X. Xmas was originally an ecclesiastical abbreviation that was used in tables and charts.

Christmas Carols were banned by Oliver Cromwell, in England between 1649 and 1660. Cromwell thought that Christmas should be a very solemn day so he banned carols and parties. The only celebration was by a sermon and a prayer service.

In 1843, the first Christmas card was printed in England for Sir Henry Cole. He was busy man who wanted to save time on his own Christmas letters, but was also interested in encouraging the expansion of the postal system. 1000 copies of the card were sold at one shilling each. It was not until the 1860s that the production of cards accelerated, with cheaper printing methods.

Then in 1870, the Post Office introduced a half penny stamp for sending cards.

From Best of the Christian Web Newsletter December 19, 2001

He has come! the Christ of God;
Left for us His glad abode,
Stooping from His throne of bliss,
To this darksome wilderness.

He has come! the Prince of Peace;
Come to bid our sorrows cease;
Come to scatter with His light
All the darkness of our night.

He, the Mighty King, has come!
Making this poor world His home;
Come to bear our sin's sad load,--
Son of David, Son of God!

He has come whose name of grace
Speaks deliverance to our race;
Left for us His glad abode,--
Son of Mary, Son of God!

Unto us a Child is born!
Ne'er has earth beheld a morn,
Among all the morns of time,
Half so glorious in its prime!

Unto us a Son is given!
He has come from God's own heaven,
Bringing with Him, from above,
Holy peace and holy love.
... Horatius Bonar

A word or two from ......

Paul Craig Roberts

Christmas is a time of traditions. If you have found time in the rush before Christmas to decorate a tree, you are sharing in a relatively new tradition. Although the Christmas tree has ancient roots, at the beginning of the 20th century only one in five American families put up a tree. It was 1920 before the Christmas tree became the hallmark of the season. Calvin Coolidge was the first president to light a national Christmas tree on the White House lawn.

Let us each cultivate carefully and joyously the portion of soil Providence has committed to our care. Let us never be hindered or distracted by ambitious thoughts, that we could do better, or a false zeal tempting us to forsake our daily task with the vain desire to surpass our neighbors. . . . Let his one thought occupy our minds. To do well what is give us to do, for thi is all that God requires at our hands. It may be summed up in four words,--simply, zealously, cheerfully,completely.
