I want to apologize to all the subscribers to the Mantle for a faulty emailing last week. I had computer problems, and, somehow, there were two copies of the newsletter in each email.

Recently as I left the auditorium after worship, I observed one of our brothers working on one of the side doors. It is not known to me how long the gentleman had been aware of that need, but it occurred to me: "I just wonder if we are as aware of the needs in the church as we should be." I would like to think that this was the first time the brother had noted this particular door needed fixing. There have been times when needs have gone unheeded for so long that irreparable harm was done to the physical facilities. Could we not apply this to the need in the spiritual realm? I am afraid that I have seen this happen more than once. Perhaps you have even had such a need in your life!

Many years ago, as a young minister’’s wife in a needy mission field, I longed to talk with an older Christian sister. I finally got up courage to go to her, but she never seemed to have the time for my concerns. When I didn’’t get the help I sought, not only was I disappointed, I allowed resentment to build up toward that sister. This ate at my soul so much that I finally went to her to let her know of the need that I had. She was quick to inform me that she had "never needed anyone to help her live the Christian life." That was many years ago, but I believe it happened to me for a reason!

Experience such as I have related to you is not told to reflect on the sister, but to tell you there are times when we should be aware of the needs of brothers and sisters in the Lord . Not only be aware, but make ourselves available to give immediate attention. Just as with a squeaking door, the condition usually worsens and with a hurting soul can truly be devastating! Perhaps we should always ask ourselves, "What would I want someone to do if I were ‘the squeaking door?’ " Jesus taught: "Whatsoever you would that men would do unto you, do ye even so to them." (Matthew 7:12). This is known as the "golden rule" and Jesus knew what effect this behavior would have in any human relationship. It is bound to fix most any problem which may arise!

There are many other teachings of the New Testament which address this matter. What does the world see in us as we deal one with the other? In John 13:35 Jesus taught that our treatment toward one another, in His Body, would indeed display to the world one of our most powerful lessons. "By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you show love for one another." The love of the Savior for the world should prompt us to display the same love for our brother in the Lord! Only then do we imitate the Master, and the world truly know we are His followers!

May each of us keep our ears attuned to the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we make ourselves more available to meet those needs, we will help to strengthen others and more people will be constrained to follow our Lord.

"Why must I weep when others sing?
'To test the deeps of suffering.'
Why must I work while others rest?
'To spend my strength at God's request.'
Why must I lose while others gain?
'To understand defeat's sharp pain.'
Why must his lot of life be mine
When that which fairer seems is thine?
'Because God knows what plans for me
Shall blossom in eternity.'"

Christian friends sharing their faith on the Net!

Tickles 'n Truth from Peggie's Place

This is a special tribute to our dear friend, Duane Milano, who passed from this life to eternity, March 3. Tx, as all his friends called him, was such a special person. He was a professor, a father and husband. He loved his family, friends, racquetball, AND GOD! God came first in his life. And he reached so many people on this side of heaven, with his love and fellowship on the job, off the job, and on the Internet.

Joy, Humor, and Faith on the net!

Did you hear a "door" squeak?
Did you even stop to speak
And determine "Why?"
Did you put an arm about
that brother or sister
in the Lord,
look them in the eye,
and just ask, "Is there
something I can do?"
With His help, we can build:
me and you!
Satan will use up all our time
if we just allow it.
Let's get busy and let him know
he doesn't fit our plan.
Christ's love will glow
as we minister to fellow man.
We'll use the oil of kindness,
and, with His help, mend
hearts that are blue.
With His help we can build:
me and you!

A young minister sitting down to dinner was about to say grace when he opened the casserole dish that his thrifty bride had prepared from all of the refrigerator leftovers.

"I don't know," he said dubiously, "but it seems to me that I've blessed all this stuff before."

In a speech before the Senate this week, Senator James Inhofe stood against world opinion and offered seven reasons why Israel alone is entitled to possess the Holy Land.

You need only be careful about one thing, never to displease God, and you will see how lovingly God will direct all that concerns you---material interests, sympathies, worldly cares; you will be astonished at the sudden enlightenment that will come to you, and the wondrous peace that will result from your labor and your toil.

Then, welcome trial, sickness, ennui, privations, injustice . . . all of it can only come directed by God's Hand, and will wound the soul only in order to cleanse some spot within.
