INAUGURATION DAY
The first Inauguration was held April 30, 1789, when President George Washington was inaugurated to be our first President.
He was 57 years of age, and rode to Federal Hall at Board and Wall streets, where he took the oath of office given by Robert R. Livingston of New York. As he concluded the oath, with hands on
an open Bible, he added the words, "So help me God." Then, he closed the Bible, walked into the Senate Chamber and gave his inaugural speech.
