They gather in December all the flowers of her life. They come from
miles bearing gifts and smiles -- and hearts overloaded with memories.
They come in anticipation of a great dinner, of laughs, of games, of
conversation, of belonging. They come where they can rekindle past
years. They come with love. They come even though their father has
died. They come even though she is not their birth mother. They come
home.
She carries on the tradition of excellence she inherited from her
mother a woman who kept Christmas every day of her life a child who
had to leave school at age 14 to help support the seven younger siblings
upon her father’s death, a child who went on to become a nurse and
raise eight children of her own, a child who grew into one of the most
magnanimous women the world has been privileged enough to know. She
remembers that her mother never forgot the mailman, the milkman, the
neighbors, the teachers, the priests, the nuns, and anyone and everyone
else that happened to appear in her life.
Christmas was pure magic. The house was filled with decorations, the
porch and steps were loaded with lighted figures, and the manger was
always in place. Santa arrived at her home with pure fantasy, illusion
and wonderment. The child in her remembers every detail. She remembers
waiting on the stairway to hear just one bell, one sound, one movement.
She remembers awaking in the morning to find the house strewn from one
end to the other with wagons, doll buggies, sleds, train sets, skates,
games and far too much to mention.
So they come. They fill her life with everything that is time honored,
cherished and revered. They fill her soul to the depths of which time
and space intertwine. They come so they can leave their mark upon the
tradition -- the tradition of love that is Christmas.
Imagine the most fragrant artistically arranged flower arrangement
filled with Asters, Chrysanthemums, Poinsettias, Lilies, Garland,
greenery and lights -- and you see her flowers in December the most
beautiful flowers of all the most gracious gifts God bestows.
